Being a Tucson native or Tucsonan, I think it’s important to share with you some fun unique facts about Tucson and the people living there!
1. We love our saguaros
And yes, the G in saguaros is silent. The saguaro cactus is one of the main symbols of the Southwest, and Tucson locals have a deep appreciation for these towering cactus that have a lifespan of around 200 years. They're often featured in local art, and many locals will go out of their way to protect saguaros on their property or in their community. They house many desert animals and they are only found in the sonoran desert.
2. We appreciate local businesses
One thing that is extremely important to local residents in Tucson is supporting our community and we often choose to shop at local businesses over national chains. First and foremost, shopping local supports small businesses in the community. These businesses often have a unique selection of products and services that can't be found in larger chain stores. By shopping at these local businesses, you're helping to support entrepreneurship and creativity in our community.
Tucson is so lucky to have so many local restaurants, shops, jewelry stores, and grocery stores that you can choose from! Shopping local can help to create a sense of community and connection. Additionally, many local businesses are actively involved in the community and support local charities, events, and organizations.
3. We Embrace the History
Tucson has a rich and diverse heritage that spans thousands of years. The region was originally inhabited by various indigenous groups, including the Hohokam and Tohono O'odham people. For the most part a lot of the people you will meet in Tucson are very laid back and friendly, I’m not saying everyone is this way but it is pretty common. Tucson's diverse population is also a contributing factor to the city's laid-back and friendly vibe. With people from all over the world living in the city, Tucsonans tend to be open-minded and accepting of others, making it easy for newcomers to feel welcome. The city's diverse population also contributes to the variety of cultural events and festivals that take place throughout the year, bringing people together and creating a sense of community. We also get over 300 days of sunshine so the extra vitamin D helps!
8. Deep Love and Pride for the Arizona Wildcats
Tucsonans have a deep and abiding love for the University of Arizona Wildcats and the role the University holds in the community, and the strong sense of pride that Tucsonans feel for their hometown team. The University of Arizona has a long and proud athletic history, with the Wildcats fielding competitive teams in a variety of sports for over a century.
